Leben und Arbeit/biography
Pawel Petasz wurde 1951 in Kalisz, in Polen geboren. Er studierte bis 1974 an der Danziger Akademie der Schönen Künste. Seit 1974 ist er bereits in der Mail Art aktiv. Bis heute beschäftigt er sich mit Malerei, Collagen, Visueller Poesie und seit 1989 auch mit digitaler Kunst. Er hat Künstlerbücher verlegt und initiiert, indem er angefangene Bücher und Collagen im Netzwerk herumschickte. 1977 gab er die erste Nummer des Commonpress-Magazins heraus und koordinierte die weiteren Nummern dieses Mail Art-Assemblings verschiedener Herausgeber bis zur Ausrufung des Kriegsrechts in Polen im Dezember 1980.
Seinen Collagen auf fragilen Materialien, seinen Briefumschlägen aus selbstgeschöpftem Papier und seinen Texten, die er im Linolschnittverfahren vervielfältigte, haftet der Charme der Dissidentenproduktion an.
Das Staatliche Museum Schwerin wählte ein Fotos aus seiner Amsterdamer Performance für Plakat und Katalog-Cover der Ausstellung “Mail Art - Osteuropa im internationalen Netzwerk” 1996.

Petasz was born in Kalisz, Poland, in 1951. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Danzig, Poland until 1974. Since 1974 he has active in the Mail Art scene. Till today he is doing paintings, collages, visual poetry and from 1989 on also digital art. He published and initiated artists’ books by sending out books and collages that he started. In 1977 he edited the first issue of the Commonpress Magazine and coordinated other issues of this Mail Art assembling of different editors up till the proclamation of the law of war in Poland in Decembre 1980.
His collages on fragile materials, his envelopes made from hand papermade paper and his texts, that he duplicated with linocuts, radiate the charm of a dissident production.
The National Museum Schwerin had chosen a photo of his Amsterdam performance for the poster and the cover of the catalogue of its exhibition “Mail Art - Osteuropa im internationalen Netzwerk” (Mail Art - Eastern Europe in the international network) in 1996.
