Leben und Arbeit/biography

Shozo Shimamoto wurde 1928 in Osaka in Japan geboren. 1954 gründete er die avantgardistische Künstlergruppe Gutai mit, die zu den bedeutendsten Erscheinungen der experimentellen internationalen Nachkriegskunst zu zählen ist. Shimamotos Arbeiten aus dieser Zeit sind nicht nur im Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe, Japan, sondern auch in der Londoner Tate Modern ausgestellt. Shimamoto ist außerdem ein international bekannter Mailartist und Performer. 1986 bat er während seiner Reise durch Ost- und West-Europa Mailartisten darum, ihm ihre Botschaften auf seinen rasierten Schädel zu schreiben, zu malen oder zu stempeln. Er gab über viele Jahre das Mail Art-Magazin AU heraus.

Shozo Shimamoto was born in Osaka, Japan in 1928. In 1954 he founded the avant garde Gutai group, which is one of the most important phenomenon of the experimental international postwar art. Shimamotos works from this period are in museum collections such as those of the Tate Gallery and the Tate Modern (in both London and Liverpool) and the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Kobe, Japan. He is furthermore an internationally renowned Mail Artist and Performer. In 1986 he visited Mail Artists in Eastern and Western Europa who he asked to write, paint or stamp messages on his shaved head. He published the Mail Art magazine AU for several years.
