Günther Ruch

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Günther Ruch was born in Bernburg/Saale in Germany in 1942 and has been living in Geneva since 1970. He was a Suisse artist and graphic designer. Since 1973 he has been running the edition Outpress. Since 1975 he has been active in the Mail Art scene. He was editor of the network assembling magazine Clinch from 1983 to 1988. He was doing concrete and visual poetry, films, performances, sound poetry, copy and stamp art. He had been a co-initiator of the 1st Decentralized Mail Art Congress in 1986 and published the documentation. He participated in the exhibition Mail Art. Netzwerk der Künstler (Mail Art. The artists’ network) at PTT-Museum Bern in 1994. Günther Ruch died on August 20th 2013.

Günther Ruch wurde 1942 in Bernburg/Saale geboren und lebte seit 1970 in Genf. Er war ein schweizer Künstler und Graphikdesigner. Seit 1973 verlegte er seine Edition Outpress. 1975 wurde er in der Mail Art-Szene aktiv. Von 1983 bis 1988 gab er das Network Assembling Magazin Clinch heraus. Günther Ruch beschäftigte sich mit Konkreter und Visueller Poesie, mit Film, Performance, Soundpoetry, Copy und Stamp Art. Er war Mitinitiator des 1. Dezentralen Internationalen Mail Art-Congresses 1986 und Herausgeber der dazugehörigen Dokumentation. Er war ferner an der Ausstellung Mail Art. Netzwerk der Künstler im PTT-Museum Bern 1994 beteiligt. Günther Ruch ist am 20. August 2013 gestorben.

Seine Frau Colette war ebenfalls in der Mail Art-Szene aktiv. Seit Günther Ruchs Tod kümmert sie sich um die Erweiterung der Einträge auf seiner Homepage, siehe unter Links.

Keith Bates

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Keith Bates was born in Liverpool, England in 1951. He lives in Manchester and worked as an Art & Design teacher until 2009. Since then he has concentrated on designing typefaces and making fonts that are distributed from his website www.k-type.com and elsewhere.

He has contributed to international Mail Art shows since his introduction to networking in 1983 at an Open University “Art & Environment” Summer School and has organised his own Mail Art projects since that time. He is known for his staunchly anti-Tourist stance. The artist’s website at www.keithbates.co.uk includes his recent Mailograms (monogram designs for mailartists), Erstaz Ephemera ticket artworks, the documentation for his Abstract Realism project, songs with Mail Art themes, and collected essays. The CAMERAderie mailartist photoportrait project was also displayed on the site from 2006 to 2010 and the the Mailart Typeface of 2004 is also available to download along with other Mail Art inspired fonts. In 2011 he collaborated with Italian mailartist Vittore Baroni on rewriting the English Wikipedia page about Mail Art and has recently been a vocal advocate for the greater acceptance of Email Art and digital participation to Mail Art projects.

Projekte/projects:

1983 : Comic to Comic – Comic book documentation of 9 x 9 cm frames contributions from mailartists.
1984 : Another Stamp Album – A stamp album of mailartists’ stamp designs.
1985 : Ticket Art – Artist-designed tickets, collages and found tickets. The mail art show, “Just the Ticket” was displayed at Didsbury Library, Manchester in January 1986.
1986 – 1987 : Elements – Mailartists were asked for a small part of their visual art, their written work and their sound (on audio cassette). The submissions formed the basis of an oil painting, a story booklet (written with Fergus Stewart), songs and sound collage.
1988 : The Eclectic Hermit – Composite booklet.
1990 : Jigsaw – Blank jigsaw pieces were sent to mailartists, worked into and returned for assembly and documentation.
1991 : Jackson Pollock’s Shoes – Accidental masterpieces from famous artists documented as a spoof Christie’s auction catalogue.
1991 : Receipts Project – Lifesize sculpture of the ‘Global Shopper’ and shopping trolley collaged with shopping receipts, made during Activity Week at Joseph Eastham School.
1992 to present : Ersatz Ephemera – Ongoing project collecting and reworking ephemeral objects such as tickets, labels etc.
1993 : The English Suppressionists – Mail Art project about ‘Englishness’. The first English Suppressionist Exhibition held at Brighton Marina Arts Index Gallery.
1995 : Artists’ Cheques – Artist-designed bank cheques culminating in the Artistcheckbooks sent to each participant. Displayed in London, York and in Holland.
1996 : Cuttings for the Studio Floor (Joint project with Leanda Ryan) – Mailartists were asked for a small part of their work for a collaged floor at 2 Ferngate Drive.
1999 : Proxy Tape Cassette Edition of Mail Art inspired music.
2000 : MailBox Friends – Mail Art essays forming the basis of the artist’s website from 2001.
2001 : Our Day Out Mailartists asked to document a Day Trip for an exhibition at Joseph Eastham High School, Salford.
2002 : Abstract Realism – Mailartists invited to join the Abstract Realists, a post post-modern movement of multiple manifestos.
2004 : Mailart Font – Artists invited to send one character for the Mailart Typeface.
2006 – 2010 : CAMERAderie – Web gallery of Mailartist Photoportraits at www.keithbates.co.uk

Keith Bates wurde 1951 in Liverpool, England geboren. Arbeitet als Art & Design-Lehrer an der Salford High School.

Er nimmt an internationalen Mail Art Shows seit 1983 teil, als er damit bei einer Offenen Universitäts “Art & Environment”-Sommerschule in Berührung kam. Er organisiert seitdem auch eigene Projekte. Er ist bekannt für seine Anti-Touristen-Haltung, seinen Künstlernamen ”Eclectic Hermit” und Projekte wie “English Suppressionists and Cuttings for the Studio Floor”. Seine “Ersatz Ephemera”-Stücke verwandeln bescheidene Eintrittskarten in Mail Art und können auf seiner Website www.keithbates.co.uk, zusammen mit einigen von der Mail Art inspirierten Songs und der Dokumentation seiner gegenwärtigen Projekte, angesehen werden. Dort findet man auch Abstrakten Realismus und “The Mail Art Typeface”, eine Mail Art Schriftart, die zum Download bereit steht.

Horst Hahn

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Horst Hahn wurde 1937 in Bergisch Gladbach geboren. Er machte zunächst eine Lehre als Installateur und Heizungsbauer. Nach dem anschließenden Studium der Restaurierung (1964 bis 1966) arbeitete er als Amtsrestaurator bis 2002. Er restaurierte von 1968 bis 1996 u.a. auch Werke von Joseph Beuys aus der Sammlung van der Grinten/Museum Schloß Moyland. Mail Art-Kontakte hatte er bereits seit Anfang der 1970er Jahre. Gleichzeitig beschäftigte er sich intensiv mit dem Fotografieren. 1994 wurde er Mitglied der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Photographie (Köln) und 1999 der Gesellschaft für Fotografie (Berlin). Sein bevorzugtes Arbeitsgebiet ist die Reisefotografie mit dem Schwerpunkt Afrika. Er lebt in Köln.
Von 1974 an hat er die Graphik-Edition “Zufall” herausgegeben (bisher 66 Ausgaben). Zusammen mit seiner Frau Barbara besitzt er eine umfangreiche Fotosammlung, die unter dem Titel “Man Ray bis Sigmar Polke” erstmals in Delmenhorst ausgestellt wurde (Katalog 2006).

Horst Hahn was born in Bergisch Gladbach in 1937. He did an apprenticeship as pipelayer and plumber. After the subsequent study of restoration (1964 to 1966) he worked as restorer until 2002. Between 1968 and 1996 he restored among other things works of Joseph Beuys from the collection van der Grinten/Museum Schloß Moyland. He had some Mail Art contacts since the beginning of the 1970s. At the same time he engaged himself intensely with photography. In 1994 he became member of the German Association for Photography (Cologne) and in 1999 of the Association for Photography (Berlin). His favorite field of work is travel photography with focus on Africa. He lives in Cologne.
From 1974 on he published the graphic edition “Zufall” (Chance/Accident) with 66 issues up to now. Together with his wife Barbara he owns a huge collection of photographs that had first been shown unter the title “Man Ray till Sigmar Polke” in Delmenhorst (Catalogue 2006).

Klaus Groh

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Klaus Groh wurde 1936 in Neisse, Oberschlesien, heute Polen, geboren. Er studierte Kunstpädagogik und Kunstgeschichte und promovierte zum Dr. phil. an der Carl-von-Ossietzky-Universität Oldenburg mit dem Thema “Der neue DaDaismus an der amerikanischen Westküste” (Maro-Verlag, Augsburg). Er brachte die Mail Art aus Amerika nach Europa und stellte Verbindungen vom Westen nach Osteuropa, insbesondere nach Polen und in die DDR, her.
Dr. Klaus Groh leitete von 1971 bis 2006 das Micro Hall Art Center und die Kleinkunstbühne Literaturium sowie von 1969 bis 1990 die IAC (International Artists’ Cooperation) und war Herausgeber des IAC-Infoblattes “IAC-INFO”, ein Vorläufer vieler Mail Art-Letters und des heutigen Netzwerks. Er lebt und arbeitet in Edewecht.

Klaus Groh was born in Neisse, today Poland in 1936. He brought American Mail Art to Europe and connected the West with Eastern Europe, especially Poland and the former GDR.
Dr. Klaus Groh lead the Micro Hall Art Center and the cabaret stage Literaturium from 1971 to 2006 as well as the IAC (International Artists’ Cooperation) from 1969 to 1990. He furthermore edited the IAC brochure “IAC-INFO”, a predecessor of a lot of Mail Art letters and of the current network. He lives and works in Edewecht.

Karla Sachse

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Karla Sachse wurde 1950 in Zschopau geboren. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Von 1969 bis 1977 studierte sie Kunstpädagogik an der Humboldt-Universität Berlin, wo sie später promovierte. 1974 begann ihre Ausstellungstätigkeit. Von 1977 bis 2002 lebte sie in Partnerschaft mit Joseph W. Huber. Seit 1982 beschäftigt sie sich intensiv mit Mail Art, Straßenaktionen, Visueller Poesie, Rauminstallationen und Sprachräumen.
Neben ihrer Tätigkeit als Lehrerin verfolgt Dr. Karla Sachse vielfältige künstlerische Projekte: Sie zeigt, organisiert oder kuratiert Ausstellungen, sie veranstaltet Workshops und wird dazu eingeladen und sie ist in vielen internationalen Ausstellungen präsent.
Für Berlin schuf sie mehrere Denk-Zeichen im öffentlichen Raum, so das “Kaninchenfeld” am ehemaligen Checkpoint in der Chausseestraße oder das “Fragenband” am ehemaligen Gefängnis des NKWD und der Stasi in der Prenzlauer Allee.

Im Auftrag des Bezirksamtes Pankow und in Kooperation mit der Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH entwickelte Sachse im Jahr 2019 unter dem Motto „30 Jahre Friedliche Revolution – Mauerfall“ ein auf deren örtliche Akteure bezogenes Erinnerungsprojekt in Form temporärer Bodenzeichen an historischen Orten, die über QR-Codes oder Webadressen zu entsprechenden Interviews oder Text-Bild-Montagen verlinken.

Sachse was born in 1950 in Zschopau. She lives and works in Berlin. From 1969 to 1977 she studied art pedagogics at Humboldt-Universität Berlin, where she later on received her PhD. In 1974 she began doing exhibitions. From 1977 to 2002 she lived together with Joseph W. Huber. Since 1982 she has been engaging herself intensely in Mail Art, street actions, visual poetry, installations in space and language areas.
Besides working as a teacher Dr. Karla Sachse does various artistic projects: She shows, organizes and curates exhibitions, is holding workshops, and is invited to and participates in a wide range of international exhibitions. For Berlin she created several Think-Signs in public spaces, i.e. the “bunny field” at the former Checkpoint in Chausseestraße oder the “question ribbon” at the former prison of the NKWD and the Stasi in Prenzlauer Allee.
