Rolf Staeck

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Rolf Staeck wurde 1943 in Bitterfeld geboren. Nach dem Abschluss des Ingenieurstudiums arbeitete er seit 1963 im Chemiekombinat Bitterfeld. 1974 erwarb er das Diplom “Chemie, Betriebswirtschaft”. 1975 wurde er durch Robert Rehfeldt und seinen Bruder Klaus Staeck mit der Mail Art bekannt gemacht. Es entstanden erste Fotomontagen und Collagen. Rolf Staeck beteiligte sich an vielen internationalen Mail Art-Projekten. Er hatte erheblichen Anteil an Beuys‘ berühmten Wirtschaftswerten. Das waren ausgewählte DDR-Produkte, die Rolf Staeck an seinen Bruder Klaus nach Heidelbergl schickte und die Beuys dann bezeichnete und signierte. Von 1976 an wurde er von der Staatssicherheit im Operativen Vorgang “Reni” bearbeitet. 1983 wurde ihm von der Stasi kulturelle Untergrundtätigkeit vorgeworfen. Während der Stasi-Verhöre wurde ihm ein Angebot zur inoffiziellen Mitarbeit gemacht. Um dem Druck entgültig zu entgehen, stellte Rolf Staeck einen Ausreiseantrag in die BRD. 1984 erfolgte seine Übersiedlung von Bitterfeld nach Heidelberg. Seither arbeitet er dort in der Edition Staeck.

Staeck was born in Bitterfeld, Germany, in 1943. After finishing his engeneering studies in 1963 he worked at the chemistry combinate Bitterfeld. In 1974 he received his diploma in “Chemistry, Business Economics”. In 1975 he was introduced to Mail Art by Robert Rehfeldt, who held contact with his brother Klaus Staeck. He did his first photomontages and collages. Rolf Staeck participated in various international Mail Art projects. He was a considerable part of Beuys‘ famous economy values. These were selected products from the former GDR, that Staeck sent to his brother or his publisher Steidl, that then were painted on and signed by Beuys. From 1976 to 1984 he was monitored by the Staatssicherheit (the secret service of the former GDR) in the operational action “Reni”. In 1983 the Staatssicherheit accused him of cultural underground activity.While being interrogated by the secret service he was offered an inofficial collaboration. To finally escape this, he filed an application for leaving the GDR. In 1984 he went from Bitterfeld to Heidelberg. Since then he has been working at the Edition Staeck.

Emilio Morandi

Emilio Morandi was born in Ponte Nossa, Bergamo, Italy, in 1940. He is a painter and performer, video- and installation artist. His performances form a mixture of gestures, text and sound. He has been active in the Mail Art network since 1979. In 1986 he exhibited the project “Berliner auf Umwegen” (Berliner on detours) at his Artestudio. In 1992 he curated the Ponte Nossa part of the Decentralized Networker Congress. In 2003 he organised the Brain Academy Apartment project at the 50th Biennal in Venice. He participated in various international Mail Art shows and festivals in Germany, The Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Canada, Japan, France and Italy.

Emilio Morandi wurde 1940 in Ponte Nossa, Bergamo, in Italien geboren. Er ist Maler und Performer, Video- und Installationskünstler. Seine Performances stellen eine Mischung aus Gesten, Text und Sound dar. Er ist seit 1979 im Mail Art-Netzwerk aktiv. 1986 stellte er u.a. in seinem Artestudio das Projekt “Berliner auf Umwegen” aus. 1992 kuratierte er den Part des dezentralen Networker-Congresses in Ponte Nossa. 2003 organisierte er das Brain Academy Apartment-Project der auf der 50. Biennale in Venedig. Er nahm an vielen internationalen Mail Art-Shows und an Festivals in Deutschland, Holland, Polen, Ungarn, Kanada, Japan, Frankreich und Italien teil.

Walter G. Goes

Walter G. Goes wurde 1950 in Aschersleben geboren. Nach sechs Semestern Studium der Kunsterziehung und Geschichte an der Universität Leipzig und vorzeitiger Exmatrikulation siedelte er 1972 nach Glowe auf Rügen über. Von 1972 bis 1974 war er Mitarbeiter im Kreiskulturhaus Bergen, wo er für den Aufbau einer Kleinen Galerie verantwortlich zeichnete. Von 1975 bis 1979 studierte er Grafik an der Kunsthochschule in Berlin-Weißensee (Diplom mit einer Illustrationsarbeit über Georg Trakl). Ab 1979 ist er freiberuflich als Grafiker, Maler und Autor auf Rügen tätig. Seit 1984 beteiligt er sich an Mail-Art-Projekten. Er war von 1981 bis 1990 künstlerischer Leiter (auf Honorarbasis) der Galerie in der Orangerie Putbus und zeigte dort 1985 die Mail Art-Ausstellung “Relations”. Eine zweite Ausstellung unter dem Titel “Künstlerbriefe/Briefzeichnungen” wurde dort 1987 von der SED (auf Veranlassung der Staatssicherheit) verboten.
Walter G. Goes lebt heute in Bergen auf Rügen und beschäftigt sich vorzugsweise mit Zeichnung, Aquarell, Druckgrafik, Objekt- und Buchkunst.

  • Relations – Beziehungen, 1985

Walter G. Goes was born in Aschersleben, Germany in 1950. After studying artistic education and history at the University of Leipzig he settled in Glowe on the island of Ruegen in 1972.
From 1972 to 1974 he worked at the Kreiskulturhaus Bergen (a place for cultural activities in the commune of Bergen, Ruegen), where he initiated a small gallery. From 1975 to 1979 he studied Design at the Kunsthochschule in Berlin-Weißensee (diploma with a work of illustrations on Georg Trakl). Since 1979 he has been working as freelancing designer, painter and author in Bergen, Rügen. Since 1984 he has been participating in Mail Art projects. As curator of the gallery at the Orangerie Puttbus (1981 to 1990) he had shown the Mail Art exhibition “Relations” in 1985. A second exhibition “Künstlerbriefe/Briefezeichnungen” (artist letters/painted mail) had been prohibited by the SED (the single political party of the former GDR) in 1987.
Since 1994 he has been living in Neddesitz, Ruegen. Today he lives in Bergen, Ruegen, and does first and foremost drawings, water color works, printed graphics, object- and book art.

Clemente Padín

Clemente Padín was born in Lascano, Uruguay in 1939. He is a poet, performer, designer, video- and multimedia-artist, and art critic. He studied Spanish Literature at the University of the Republic of Uruguay. In 1967 he made first experiences in the field of Mail Art, exchanging publications with Edgardo Antonio Vigo, Guillermo Deisler and Dámaso Ogaz. In 1969 he published the magazine “OVUM” as well as postcards and visual poems. During the Military Dictatorship in Uruguay he organised the first Latin-American Mail Art exhibition in 1974 at Gallery U in Montevideo. With his fake postal stamps he doomed the dictatorial regime for its brutal suppression of human rights. This might have lead to his imprisonment from August 1977 to Novembre 1979. Mail Artists from all around the world protested against it.

In October 1983 he showed the public his artistic activities in the exhibitions “1. Mai” in Uruguay. After that he organised the Latin-American and Caribian union of Mail Artists, founded August 31, 1984 in Rosario, Argentina. Since then Padín has been participating in hundreds of Mail Art exhibitions worldwide.

“Mail Art is not made for the art marked, it is there to be consumed and communicated. It is impossible to reduce the artistic to political or social interests. Clemente Padín wurde 1939 in Lascano in Uruguay geboren. Er ist Poet und Performer, Grafiker, Video- und Multimediakünstler und Kunstkritiker. Er studierte Spanische Literatur an der Universität der Republik von Uruguay. 1967 machte er erste Erfahrungen mit Mail Art, als er mit Edgardo Antonio Vigo, Guillermo Deisler und Dámaso Ogaz Publikationen austauschte. 1969 veröffentlichte er das Magazin “OVUM” sowie Postkarten und visuelle Gedichte. Während der uruguayanischen Militärdiktatur organisierte er 1974 die erste lateinamerikanische Mail Art-Ausstellung in der Galerie U in Montevideo. Mit seinen unechten Post-Stempeln verurteilte er das diktatorische Regime für seine brutale Unterdrückung der Menschenrechte. Das führte möglicherweise zu seiner Einkerkerung von August 1977 bis November 1979. Mailartisten in aller Welt protestierten dagegen.

Im Oktober 1983 stellte er seine künstlerischen Aktivitäten in der Ausstellung “1. Mai” in Uruguay vor. Danach organisierte er die lateinamerikanische und karibische Vereinigung der MailArtistInnen, die am 31. August 1984 in Rosario, Argentinien, gegründet wurde. Seither hat Clemente Padín an Hunderten von Mail Art-Ausstellungen in aller Welt teilgenommen.

“Mail Art-Kunstwerke sind nicht für den Kunstmarkt gemacht, sondern um konsumiert und kommuniziert zu werden. Es ist unmöglich, das Künstlerische auf das Politische oder Soziale zu reduzieren. Der politische Inhalt von Kunst ist untrennbar mit ihrem künstlerischen Inhalt verbunden. Mail Art offenbart sich als eine Form des sozialen Bewusstseins.” Clemente Padín

Ever Arts

Ever Arts (Johan Everaers) was born May 12, 1949 in Dirksland, The Netherlands. He worked as a teacher of French language and has been doing Mail Art since 1984. He used to run a gallery specialised in Mail Art (Gallery Galerij) in a secondary school in Zierikzee (Holland). Mail Artists like Pawel Petasz, Johan van Geluwe, Rod Summers, Joseph W. Huber, Kees Francke, Piermario Ciani, Baudhuin Simon, Guillermo Deisler, Anna Banana and Ko de Jonge etc. had solo-presentations there. He published about Mail Art and as a birdwatcher also about Birds. He created his own magazine “Leskimo” in 1997 and leads the imaginary country of “Birdland”. He is one of the three editors of the Dutch literary magazine Ballustrada. In 2013 appeared his book “Het Grote Gedicht” with stories about birds and mailart.

Ever Arts (mit bürgerlichem Namen: Johan Everaers) wurde am 12. Mai 1949 in Dirksland, Niederlande, geboren und ist von Beruf Französischlehrer. Mail Art macht er seit 1984. Seit 1989 betreibt er in Zierikzee eine kleine Galerie, die auf Mail Art spezialisiert ist. Dort stellten u.a. die bekannten Mail Artisten Pawel Petasz, Johan van Geluwe, Rod Summers, Joseph W. Huber, Kees Francke, Piermario Ciani, Baudhuin Simon, Guillermo Deisler, Anna Banana und Ko de Jonge aus.
Er publizierte über die Mail Art und als Ornithologe auch über Vögel. Er schuf seine eigene Zeitschrift “Leskimo” im Jahr 1997 und führt das imaginäre Land “Birdland”. Er ist einer der drei Herausgeber des niederländischen Literaturzeitschrift Ballustrada. Im Jahr 2013 erschien sein Buch “Het Grote Gedicht” mit Geschichten über Vögel und Mail Art.
