Fraenz Frisch

François Frisch, called Fraenz, is as an artist autodidact, was born in Luxembourg, August 12, 1943, and was working for an administration till his retirement on January 1, 2001.
He attended courses in drawing , painting (watercolour), etching/engraving and was also interested in photography, and much more. From 1984 to 2006 he had been a member of the consulting culture committee of his administrative district.
As a member of an association of artists, Fraenz has been the co-founder of the annual Festival de la Gravure in Luxembourg in 2001. He is, among others, a member of the one and only engravor’s workshop of the Grand-Duchy. In the end of 2002, encouraged by the artist Francis Van Maele (Francis Fan Mail), now living and working in Ireland, he dedicated himself to Mail Art. The encounter with Baudhuin Simon from Belgium, and their friendship had been decisive for his future activities. Fraenz has made many contacts and calls and participated in a lot of projects, designed personal postcards and artistamps as well as illustrations.

François Frisch, genannt Fraenz, ist als Künstler Autodidakt. Er wurde am 12.08.1943 in Luxemburg geboren und arbeitete bis zu seiner Pensionierung als Verwaltungsangestellter.
Er nahm an mehreren Kursen im Zeichnen, in Aquarellmalerei und Radierung teil und beschäftigt sich seit 1975 mit der Fotographie. Er hat an vielen Kollektivausstellungen teilgenommen. Von 1984 bis 2006 war er Mitglied des beratenden Kulturausschusses der Verwaltung seiner Gemeinde.
2001 ist er Mitbegründer eines alljährlichen Festival de la Gravure in Luxemburg. Im Jahre 2002, ermutigt durch den heute in Irland lebenden Artisten Francis Van Maele (Francis Fan Mail), verschrieb er sich der Postkunst. Die Begegnung mit Baudhuin Simon (Pig Dada) aus Belgien, war entscheidend für sein künftiges Schaffen. Fraenz hat viele internationale Kontakte geknüpft, stets mit originalen Zeichnungen an zahlreichen Projekten teilgenommen, entwirft aber auch eigene Postkarten und Künstlermarken und fertigt Illustrationen an.

François Frisch, dit Fraenz, autodidacte, né à Luxembourg, le 12.08.1943, travaillais jusqu’à sa pension-retraite, le 1.o1.2001, comme employé d’administration.
Il suivait des cours de dessin, de peinture (aquarelle), gravure, et s’intéresse également de près à la photographie, et à beaucoup d’autres choses encore. A partir de 1984 (jusqu’en 2006) il a été membre de la commission culturelle consultative de l’administration de sa commune. Illustrations, design, participation à des expositions collectives.
En tant que membre d’une association d’artistes, Fraenz est, en 2001, le cofondateur du Festival de la Gravure annuel au Luxembourg. Il est, e.a., membre du seul atelier de gravure du Grand-Duché. A la fin de 2002, encouragé par l’artiste Francis Van Maele (Francis Fan Mail), aujourd’hui vivant, et oeuvrant, en Irlande, il se voua audit art postal. La rencontre avec Baudhuin Simon de Belgique, et leur amitié, furent dès lors décisives pour ses futures activités; beaucoup de contacts, des appels à contributions, et des participations à bon nombre de projets, édition de cartes postales et de timbres d’artistes personnels.

Jörg Seifert

Jörg Seifert wurde 1968 in Annaberg in der DDR geboren. Nach Abitur und Grundwehrdienst machte er von 1988 bis 1990 Praktika am Annaberger Theater und an den Theaterhäusern in Chemnitz. Anschließend studierte er von 1991 bis 93 an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Dresden die Fachrichtung Bühnenbild. Von 1993 an beschäftigte er sich als Sachbearbeiter nebenberuflich mit Malerei, Grafik und Plastik. 1998 übernahm er die ehrenamtliche Leitung des Kunstkellers in Annaberg. Seit 2004 gehört er zum Vorstand des Fördervereins Carlfriedrich Claus – Lebens- und Arbeitsort in Annaberg Buchholz e.V. Seit 2006 ist er freiberuflich tätig.
Seit Ende der 1980er Jahre ist er im Mail Art-Netzwerk aktiv. Er hat eine Reihe von Projekten initiiert und in Katalogen dokumentiert. Von 1995 bis 2000 gab er das Mail Art-Sampling “1 von 20” und seitdem gibt er die “Duo-Editionen” des Kunstkellers Annaberg e.V. heraus.

Seifert was born in Annaberg, former GDR, in 1968. After his high school diploma and the basic military service he did an internship at the Annaberg theatres and theatres of Chemnitz from 1988 to 1990. In the following he studied stage design at the University of Fine Arts in Dresden from 1991 to 1993. From 1993 on he was clerical assistant and part-time doing paintings, graphics and sculptures. In 1998 he honorary took over control of the Kunstkeller in Annaberg. Since 2004 he has been part of the management of the development association Carlfriederich Claus – living- and working space Annaberg Buchholz e.V. Since 2006 he has been freelancer.
Since the end of the 1980s he has been active in the Mail Art network. He initiated a few projects and documented them in catalogues. From 1995 to 2000 he published the Mail Art sampling “1 von 20” (1 of 20), since then he has been publishing the “Duo-Editionen” of the Kunstkeller Annaberg.

Pawel Petasz

Pawel Petasz was born in Kalisz, Poland in 1951. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland until 1974. Since 1974 he has been active in the Mail Art scene. Until today he is doing paintings, collages, visual poetry and from 1989 on digital art as well. He published and initiated artists’ books by sending out books and collages that he started. In 1977 he edited the first issue of the Commonpress Magazine and coordinated other issues of this Mail Art assembling of different editors up till the proclamation of the law of war in Poland in December 1980.
His collages on fragile materials, his envelopes made from hand papermade paper and his texts, that he duplicated with linocuts, radiate the charm of a dissident production.
The National Museum Schwerin had chosen a photo of his Amsterdam performance for the poster and the cover of the catalogue of its exhibition “Mail Art – Osteuropa im internationalen Netzwerk” (Mail Art – Eastern Europe in the international network) in 1996.

He died April 11, 2019 in his hometown Elblag.

Pawel Petasz wurde 1951 in Kalisz, in Polen geboren. Er studierte bis 1974 an der Danziger Akademie der Schönen Künste. Seit 1974 ist er bereits in der Mail Art aktiv. Bis heute beschäftigt er sich mit Malerei, Collagen, Visueller Poesie und seit 1989 auch mit digitaler Kunst. Er hat Künstlerbücher verlegt und initiiert, indem er angefangene Bücher und Collagen im Netzwerk herumschickte. 1977 gab er die erste Nummer des Commonpress-Magazins heraus und koordinierte die weiteren Nummern dieses Mail Art-Assemblings verschiedener Herausgeber bis zur Ausrufung des Kriegsrechts in Polen im Dezember 1980.
Seinen Collagen auf fragilen Materialien, seinen Briefumschlägen aus selbstgeschöpftem Papier und seinen Texten, die er im Linolschnittverfahren vervielfältigte, haftet der Charme der Dissidentenproduktion an.
Das Staatliche Museum Schwerin wählte ein Fotos aus seiner Amsterdamer Performance von 1980 für Plakat und Katalog-Cover der Ausstellung “Mail Art – Osteuropa im internationalen Netzwerk” 1996.

Pawel Petasz starb am 11. April 2019 in Elblag.

Heino Otte

Heino Otte wurde am 7. März 1946 in Hatterwüsting im Landkreis Oldenburg in Norddeutschland geboren. Er schloss sein Studium der Betriebswirtschaft als Dipl.-Kaufmann ab. Seit 1985 beschäftigte Heino Otte sich mit Mail Art. 1986 feierte er den 99. Geburtstag von Kurt Schwitters, den er über alle Maßen verehrte, mit einer Mail Art-Wanderausstellung, bei der die Post, die an einer Leine hing, durch Schwittersum, einen kleinen Ort in Ostfriesland, getragen wurde. Als er 1987 berentet wurde, war er in und von Oldenburg aus “nur noch” künstlerisch tätig. Er besuchte im selben Jahr z.B. die verbotene Eröffnung der Mail Art-Ausstellung “Künstlerbriefe/Briefzeichnungen” in Putbus und entschädigte die anderen angereisten Gäste mit einer Performance seines pneumatischen Theaters im Pappkarton in einer Gaststätte. Selbst organisierte er 1988 den “Ikodudida”, den internationalen Kongress der Universaldilettanten in Dangast. Wiederum als Gast besuchte er u.a. 1992 den Berliner Teil der 2. Dezentralen internationalen Mail Art-Congresses.
Heino Otte starb am 8. Mai 1993 an den Folgen einer Hepatitis C, die er sich neben Aids durch die vielen Infusionen, die wegen seiner angeborenen Hämophilie notwendig waren, zugezogen hatte. Im Jahre 2010 gelangte sein Archiv in den Besitz des Studienzentrums für Künstlerpublikationen, Neues Museum Weserburg Bremen.

Otte was born March 7, 1946 in Hatterwüsting (community of Oldenburg, Northern Germany). He studied business economics and became tradesman with diploma. He had been doing Mail Art since 1985. In 1986 he celebrated Kurt Schwitters’ (who he admired very much) 99th anniversary with a travelling Mail Art exhibition, carrying mail that he had hung on to a rope through Schwittersrum, a small place in East Frisia. When he got retired in 1987 he “only” did artistic works from and in Oldenburg. He saw i.e. the forbidden Mail Art exhibition “Künstlerbriefe/Briefzeichnungen” in Puttbus. There he did a performance of his pneumatic theatre in a cardboard box in a restaurant. He himself organised “Ikodudida” in 1988, an international congress of universal dilletantism in Dangast. As a guest he was at the Berlin part of the 2nd Decentralized international Mail Art congress.
Heino Otte died May 8, 1993 of hepatitis C, that he got (besides Aids) of the many infusions he needed due to his natural hemophilia. In 2010 his archive had been handed over to the Studienzentrums für Künstlerpublikationen, Neues Museum Weserburg Bremen.

Josef Klaffki (Joki)

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Josef Klaffki wird 1943 im Ostpreußen geboren. 1945 flieht seine Familie mit dem Kleinkind über die vereiste Ostsee. Klaffki machte zunächst eine Lehre als Bauschlosser, später besuchte er die Kunstakademie in Berlin. In der Mail Art-Szene ist er seit 1979 aktiv. Er nannte sich Joki und war für seine Artistamps und seine besonders aufwendigen Briefumschläge bekannt. Seit 1985 gab er die internationale Kunstzeitschrift SMILE in Minden, wo er lebte, heraus (13 Ausgaben). Im Frühjahr 1990 trat er mit einer Performance bei der Recycling-Mail Art-Ausstellung der Gruppe B.E.R.M. in Potsdam auf.
Er ertrank beim Segeln im Atlantik am 18. Mai 1997.

Klaffki was born in Eastern Prussia in 1943. In 1945, with him as a little child his family flew over the frozen baltic sea. Klaffki became a building fitter, he later attended the Academy of Arts in Berlin. He had been active in the Mail Art network since 1979. He called himself “Joki” and was known for his artistamps and extremely extensive envelopes. Since 1985 he had been editing the international art magazine “SMILE” in Minden, Germany, where he lived (13 issues). He did a performance in early 1990 at the Recycling-Mail Art exhibition of the group B.E.R.M. in Potsdam.
He drowned while sailing the Atlantic Ocean on May 18, 1997.
