Gerd Beyer wurde 1956 in Bautzen geboren. Seit seit seinem dritten Lebensmonat lebt er aber in Berlin–Prenzlauer Berg. Der gelernte Schriftsetzer machte später Ausbildungen zum Desinfektor und zum medizinischen Dokumentationsassistenten. Seinem Namen fügte er Sal hinzu.

Zur Mail Art kam er über Robert Rehfeldt. 1984 initiierte er zusammen mit Karim Saab von der Initiativgruppe Hoffnung Nicaragua (und unterstützt von Birger Jesch) das Mail Art-Projekt Nicaragua Hope and Politics, das zum am meisten ausgestellten Projekt in der DDR werden sollte. Es wurde in Kirchen in Leipzig, Halle, Erfurt, Leuna, Potsdam. Schwerin, Magdeburg, Dresden und Berlin gezeigt. Während der Zeit, als Sal-Gerd Beyer als Desinfektor am Krankenhaus Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin arbeitete, veranstaltete er im Warteraum der Entlausung 1988/89 drei Ausstellungen mit Mail Art.

Nach weiteren Arbeitsstellen ist er heute als medizinischer Dokumentationsassistent wieder an diesem Krankenhaus angestellt.

Gerd Beyer was born in Bautzen in 1956 but is living in Berlin–Prenzlauer Berg since the age of three months. He became typesetter and later on did schooling as disinfector and medical data assistant. He added Sal to his name later.

He came into contact with Mail Art via Robert Rehfeldt. In 1984 he initiated the Mail Art project Nicaragua Hope and Politics (together with Karim Saab of the Initiativgruppe Hoffnung Nicaragua and supported by Birger Jesch), which was to become the most exhibited project in the GDR. It had been shown in churches in Leipzig, Halle, Erfurt, Leuna, Potsdam, Schwerin, Magdeburg, Dresden and Berlin. During his time as disinfector at the Hospital Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin, he did three Mail Art exhibition in the waiting room of the delousing department in 1988/89.

After some other working places he today is back at this hospital as medical data assistant.

Harley (Terra Candella) was born on Oct 15, 1940 in New Albany, Indiana. He studied painting and art history at Indiana University and Oberlin College.

Harley had an interest in philately from an early age, and this interest ultimately led him to establishing his own local post, Tristan Local Post, in 1975 in Oberlin, Ohio. The name was chosen because of a long time interest (via philately) in the Tristan da Cunha islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Harley began to issue stamps from Tristan Local Post, but he was not aware of other stamp artists and Mail Art until seeing the catalogue of the artiststamp exhibition organized by James Felter at Simon Fraser University in 1975-76. This opened up various contacts for Harley, and he began to participate in the mail art network.

In 1978 Harley closed Tristan Local Post and created his own country, Terra Candella (Land of Light). It was under these auspices that all future mail art would be conducted. He continued to broaden his contacts in the network, including his first trip to Europe in 1980 to meet with other mail artists. Harley facilitated the exhibition of artistsamps at Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College in 1978, an exhibition organized by Al Souza. This was followed by a large mail art show curated by Harley at SPACES Gallery in Cleveland, and then in 1987 he organized the Corresponding Worlds exhibition at Allen Memorial Art Museum. The event consisted of both a museum exhibition of artistamps and mail art, and a symposium. Present at the symposium were Michael Bidner, John P. Jacob, Gerard and Fernand Barbot, Judith Hoffberg, Reid Wood (State of Being), Ed Varney, Dog Fish, E. F. Higgins III, Cracker Jack Kid, John Held Jr., Patrick Beilman, Joel Smith, Joel Lipman, Steven Esrati, and Dennis Higdon.

In 1995 Harley moved from Oberlin to California, continuing to participated in the mail art network and organized exhibitions related to mail art and artiststamps.

Harley died on Jan 10, 2016 in Graton, CA.

1978 gründete Harley ein eigenes Land, das er Terra Candella (Land des Lichts) nannte, und ermöglichte eine Ausstellung von Artistamps am Oberlin College, die von Al Souza organisiert wurde. Anschließend kuratierte Harley eine Ausstellung in der SPACES Galerie in Cleveland. Er weitete seine Kontakte im Netzwerk aus und unternahm 1980 seine erste Reise nach Europa, wo er sich mit Mail Artisten traf. 1987 organisierte er die Ausstellung Corresponding Worlds im Allen Memorial Art Museum. Dort fand am Oberlin College auch ein Symposium statt, an dem Michael Bidner, John P. Jacob, Gerard und Fernand Barbot, Judith Hoffberg, Reid Wood (State of Being), Ed Varney, Dog Fish, E. F. Higgins III, Cracker Jack Kid, John Held Jr., Patrick Beilman, Joel Smith, Joel Lipman, Steven Esrati und Dennis Higdon teilnahmen.

1995 zog Harley von Oberlin nach Kalifornien. Er nahm weiterhin am Mail Art Netzwerk teil und organisierte Ausstellungen, die sich mit Mail Art und Artistamps befassen.

Harley starb am 10. Januar 2016 in Graton, CA.
