Rod Summers

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Rod Summers was born in 1943 in Dorset, England. He is a sound, visual, conceptual artist, performance poet, dramatist, mail and book artist, publisher, archivist, and lecturer on intermedia. He lives in Maastricht, The Netherlands.

The results of Summers’ multiple, art-related activities have often appeared as part of his concept of VEC (Visual, Experimental, Concrete), which he originated in 1973.

In 1999 CNN International featured Summers in its Art Club show as a representative of avant-garde art in Holland. In addition, over the last 20 years, Summers has performed his work at various festivals in Europe, including the Reykjavik Art Festival (1991), the Polypoetry Festival of Sound Poetry (Bologna, 1993), and the International Sound Poetry Festival (Bologna, 1997), among others.

Summers is among the “second wave” of intermedia artists. The first wave including Dick Higgins, Vito Acconci, John Cage, Allan Kaprow, and Joseph Beuys. He differs from Higgins and members of the first generation, however, in that he is less theoretical and more experiential in his approach to his art.


Rod Summers wurde 1943 in Dorset, England geboren. Er ist Sound-, Konzept- und visueller Künstler, Performance Poet, Dramatiker, Mail Artist und Buchkünstler, Publizist, Archivar und Dozent für Intermedialität. Er lebt in Maastricht, Holland.

Die Ergebnisse von Summers vielfältigen Aktivitäten sind Teil seines Konzepts VEC (Visuell, Experimentell, Konkret), das er 1973 begonnen hat.

1999 wurde Summers als Repräsentant der Avantgardekunst Hollands im Art Club von CNN International vorgestellt. Darüber hinaus hat Summers in den letzten 20 Jahren seine Performances auf verschiedenen Festivals in Europa abgehalten, u.a. beim Reykjavik Art Festival (1991), beim Polypoetry Festival of Sound Poetry (Bologna, 1993) und beim International Sound Poetry Festival (Bologna, 1997).

Summers gehört zur “zweiten Welle” der Intermedia-Künstler. Zu denen der ersten Welle gehörten Künstler wie Dick Higgins, Vito Acconci, John Cage, Allan Kaprow und Joseph Beuys. Im Unterschied zu diesen Künstlern ist er weniger theoretisch und mehr experimentell in seinem Umgang mit der Kunst.

  1. Hi Konrad, I notice I am nowhere at all on the address list! Believe me I am present on the planet… that is assuming Maastricht is still here… I had better just check by looking out the window… yes still here and as I can see the street outside I must be here to.
