Roberto Scala

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Roberto Scala was born in Sorrento, Italy, in 1968. He lives and works between Trento and Sorrento. In 1992 he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in Milan. From 1991 to 1996 he worked as assistant for the Foundation Mudima in Milan, setting up installations by Wolf Vostell, Nam June Paik, Ben Patterson and others.

In 2000 he participated in the 3rd international artists’ book show in the King St. Stephen Museum in Budapest, Hungary; in 2008 Room arte contemporanea in the Limitet not art gallery in Milan; in 2009 he exhibited in the World Pavillion Mestre Garage 3 in Mestre, Venice, and had been invited to the 53rd International Biennale in Venice.

He participated in more than 800 Mail Art shows, did E-mail art, Installations, Visual Poetry and Video art.

His works were published in Flash Art (n°159-167-184-211-224-231-239-247-248), Juliet Art Magazine (n°50-56-58-114-118-120), and Arte Mondatori (n°236-277-289).

Von 1991 bis 1996 arbeitete er als Assistent für die Foundation Mudima in Mailand und baute dabei u.a. Installationen von Wolf Vostell, Nam June Paik und Ben Patterson auf.

Im Jahr 2000 nahm er an der 3. Internationalen artists’ book show im König St. Stephans Museum in Budapest, Ungarn teil; 2008 am Room arte contemporanea in the Limitet not art gallery in Mailand; 2009 stellte er im World Pavillion Mestre Garage 3 in Mestre, Venedig aus und war darüber hinaus zur 53. Internationalen Biennale in Venedig eingeladen.

Scala hat bereits an über 800 Mail Art shows, E-Mail Kunstprojekten, Installationen, Visueller Poesie und Video-Kunst mitgewirkt.

Endre Tót

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Endre Tót was born in Sümeg, Hungary in 1937. In 1958 he began to study at the Academy of Art, where he rapidly came into conflict with the prevalent doctrine of Socialist Realism and was subsequently expelled. Following this, he studied at the Budapest College of Applied Arts. In the 1960s, Tót gained a reputation as a painter of art informel. In 1970, he stopped painting. In order to break out of his artistic and political isolation, Tót contacted other artists through Mail Art actions and thus came into contact with a lot of Fluxus artists like Robert Filliou, Dick Higgins, Ken Friedman und Wolf Vostell. In 1972/73, Tót’s works were shown at the Fluxshoe exhibition that toured several cities in England. In 1976, he was a guest of the gallery Écart in Geneva, founded by John M. Armleder, where he realised his first street actions. Tót was a guest of the DAAD’s Berlin Artists’ Programme in 1978. Since 1980, he has lived in Cologne. He calls himself an “illegitimate child of Fluxus” and is best known for his “I’m glad if I can…” actions.

Endre Tót wurde 1937 in Sümeg in Ungarn geboren. 1958 nahm er ein Studium an der Kunstakademie in Budapest auf, wurde jedoch kurz darauf aus politischen Gründen wieder von der Akademie verwiesen. Er studierte anschließend an der Hochschule für Angewandte Künste. In den 1960er Jahren trat er als Maler des Informel hervor. 1970 hörte er auf zu malen. Um seine künstlerische Isolation zu durchbrechen, nahm Tót an der Mail Art teil und kam so mit vielen Fluxus-Künstlern, wie Robert Filliou, Dick Higgins, Ken Friedman und Wolf Vostell, in Kontakt. 1972/73 wurden seine Arbeiten auf der Fluxshoe-Ausstellung gezeigt, die in England durch mehrere Städte tourte. 1976 war Tót Gast in der von John M. Armleder begründeten Galerie Écart in Genf, wo er seine ersten Straßenaktionen durchführte. 1978 war Tót Gast des DAAD in West-Berlin. Seit 1980 lebt er in Köln. Er bezeichnet sich selbst als “illegitimes Kind von Fluxus” und ist besonders für seine “I’m glad if I can…”-Aktionen berühmt geworden. 1999 zeigte das Museum Ludwig  »Who‘s Afraid of Nothing? Absent Images«. Tót hatte auch in den letzten Jahren viele internationale Ausstellungen, z.B. 2010 in Bremen, Nürnberg, Paris und Istanbul.

Mail Art Schaffen

“Ich kann es nicht oft genug betonen, dass die Post die einzige Möglichkeit war, aus der Isolation auszubrechen… Durch die Post war ich schnell in die internationalen Avantgarde integriert. Die Mail Art ist das merkwürdigste Kapitel der Kunstgeschichte: Die Künstler hatten sich gegenseitig wunderbare Werke absolut selbstlos zugeschickt… Der Postverkehr, trotz Diktatur, funktionierte überraschend einwandfrei.”

Carol Stetser

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Carol Stetser was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1948. She studied theater at Smith College and Communications at Emerson College. In 1974 she moved to Arizona and founded Padma Press two years later. When Judith Hoffberg reviewed some of her books for Umbrella she came into contact with the Mail Art network. The first Mail Art show Stetser took part in was Hoffbergs Umbrella show. When she “retired” she had been active in the network for over 14 years.

In the 1980s she began making xerographic collages. From 1984 on she focussed on Visual Poetry. She began making ATCs in 1995/96 that she exchanged in the mail and in 1999 she started her Winter Solstice Mailings.

She continues to correspond with about a dozen artists she met through the network.

Sie studierte Theaterwissenschaften am Smith College und Kommunikation am Emerson College. 1974 zog sie nach Arizona und gründete zwei Jahre später die Padma Press. Dadurch dass Judith Hoffberg ihre Bücher in Umbrella besprach, kam sie mit dem Mail Art-Netzwerk in Kontakt. Die erste Mail Art-Ausstellung, an der sie teilnahm, war Hoffbergs Umbrella show. Als sie in “Rente” ging, war sie bereits 14 Jahre aktiv im Netzwerk aufgetreten.

In den 1980er Jahren begann sie mit Collagen aus Fotokopien. Ab 1984 konzentrierte sie sich auf Visuelle Poesie. 1995/96 begann sie ATCs zu machen, die sie per Post austauschte und 1999 begann sie ihre Winter Solstice Mailings.

Sie korrespondiert noch immer mit über einem dutzend Künstlern, die sie während ihrer aktiven Zeit im Mail Art-Netzwerk kennengelernt hat.

Christine Tarantino (Words of Light)

Christine Tarantino (Words of Light) was born in New York City in 1948 and currently resides in western Massachusetts. She has been active in mail art and publishing since 1990 and regularly exhibits her work, artist books and mail art throughout the world.

Christine Tarantino (Words of Light) wurde 1948 in New York City geboren und lebt derzeitig in Massachusetts. Sie ist seit 1990 in der Mail Art und als Herausgeberin aktiv und stellt regelmässig ihre Arbeiten, Künstlerbücher und Mail Art in der ganzen Welt aus.
