Leben und Arbeit/biography

Tulio Restrepo was born in Medellín, Colombia, in 1958, where he still lives and works as multimedia artist and University professor.

He studied Graphic Design at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellín from 1977–1982, and finished his post graduate studies in Multimedia Design at the National University in Medellín in 2004 and Urban Studies at the University EAFIT in Medellín in 2007.

With his training as a graphic designer and artist, he began his activity in visual arts in the year 1978, working on silk screen and with sculptures. He began participating in Mail Art in 1982, when he was a student of the School of Graphic and Industrial Design of the Papal Bolivarian University in Medellín. The Colombian Conceptual Artist and Graphic Designer, Carlos Echeverry, who had been active in Mail Art from 1981 to 1983, introduced him to the Mail Art network.

Tulio Restrepo had been in contact with lots of the Latin American pioneers in Mail Art: The Argentineans Edgardo Antonio Vigo and Graciela Gutiérrez Marx, the Uruguayan Clemente Padin, the Chilean Guillermo Deisler, and Jesús Romeo Galdamez from El Salvador, César Espinoza from México, and many more.

He also organized exhibitions in Medellín in order to introduce Mail Art, its activity and characteristics to the University community.

Tulio Restrepo wurde 1958 in Medellín geboren, wo er noch heute lebt und als Mulitmedia-Künstler und Universitätsprofessor arbeitet.

Er studierte von 1977–1982 Grafikdesign an der dortigen Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana und schloss später noch zwei Postgraduiertenstudiengänge ab: 2004 Mulitmedia-Design an der National University in Medellín und 2007 Urban Studies an der University EAFIT ebenfalls in Medellín.

Als Künstler arbeitete er zunächst auf Leinwand und bildhauerisch. Mit der Mail Art begann er 1982 als Student. Der kolumbianische Konzeptkünstler Carlos Echeverry, ein aktiver Mail Artist von 1981–83, machte ihn mit dem Netzwerk bekannt.

Tulio Restrepo kam in Kontakt mit vielen lateinamerikanischen Mail Art-Pionieren wie mit den Argentiniern E.A. Vigo (Link) und Graciela Gutiérrez Marx, dem Uruguayer Clemente Padin (Link), dem Chilenen Guillermo Deisler (Link) und Jesús Romeo Galdamez aus El Salvador sowie César Espinoza aus Mexiko.

Er organisierte Ausstellungen in Medellín, die die Mail Art der Universitätsgemeinde näher bringen sollte.
