Leben und Arbeit/biography
Keith A. Buchholz was born in Greenville, Illinois, in 1963. He lives and works in St. Louis, Missouri. Buchholz is concerned primarily with Intermedia, Fluxus and Mail Art. He is a member of IUOMA, FLUXUS/WEST, the Chicago Flux Ensemble, FluxNexus, Open Fluxus and together with Picasso Gaglione co-founder of the Dada Machine Fluxus, a performance group in Chicago.
Buchholz has organized a number of Fluxus events and network gatherings in the U.S., including among others a six-day FluxFest at the MCA Chicago and the last three FLUXFESTS in New York (2009 at Pieroge, at Printed Matter in 2010 and 2011 at various locations throughout New York City). For the last six years he has maintained an open Mail Art archive that has been exhibited annually in conjunction with the Open Studio event at the Museum of Contemporary Art in St. Louis. He is currently curating a contemporary Mail Art and Fluxus exhibition, which will be shown in October 2011 at the Kaunas museum as part of Lithuania’s Biennial.
Buchholz has been performing in galleries and exhibitions, etc. since 1982, amongst others at The Harris Theatre in Chicago, Center for Book Arts, Minneapolis, Marginal Arts Festival, Roanoke, Va., Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, The Emily Harvey Foundation and Stendhal Gallery, New York. His revivals of classic Fluxus performances led to collaborations with early Fluxus members like Larry Miller, Geoffrey Hendricks, and Alison Knowles.
Buchholz was first introduced to Mail Art through Judith Hoffberg‘s UMBRELLA magazine in 1982. His work was heavily influenced by west coast Mail Art/performance groups such as the Bay Area Dadaists. In the 1980s and 90s he worked in Xerography for zines and other publications that were distributed regionally, but occasionally also found their way into the network. Over the last decade he has participated in many Mail Art shows, and collaborated with many artists from the network, due in large part to his correspondence with Ruud Janssen.
Buchholz also leads Fluxpress, a small publishing house of Fluxus and Mail Art objects and magazines, including the Fluxkit Quarterly (assembling a kit), ADD/PASS (a Mail Art magazine), WORD. (Visual poetry), PILE (historical Mail Art and performance documents), and DOCUMENT (new performance and Mail Art documentation).
His Mail Art and other publications have been shown in over 40 countries around the world and are published in various art journals worldwide. They can also be seen together with his works in various museums around the world, including The Getty, The Tate, St. Louis Art Museum, University of Iowa ATCA Collection, Chicago Art Institute, Museum Fluxus + (Potsdam), University of Ohio Special Collections, Museum of Modern Art Archives, New York.
He also moderates OPEN Fluxus, an online community with over 600 artists.

Momentan kuratiert er eine Ausstellung mit zeitgenössischen Fluxus- und Mail Art-Künstlern, die im Oktober 2011 im Kaunas Museum als Teil der litauischen Biennale gezeigt werden soll.

Mit der Mail Art kam Buchholz durch Judith Hoffbergs UMBRELLA Magazin 1982 in Kontakt. Er wurde vor allem von Mail Art/Performance-Gruppen der amerikanischen Westküste, wie den Bay Area Dadaists, beeinflusst. In den 1980er und 90er Jahren arbeitete er mit Xerographien für Zines und andere Publikationen, die regional vertrieben wurden, aber gelegentlich auch den Weg ins Netzwerk fanden. Über die letzte Dekade hinweg hat er an vielen Mail Art-Shows teilgenommen und dabei mit vielen Künstlern aus dem Netzwerk kollaboriert, was zu großen Teilen auf seine Korrespondenz mit von Ruud Janssen zurückzuführen ist.
Buchholz führt darüber hinaus die Fluxpress, einen kleinen Verlag für Fluxus- und Mail Art-Objekte und -Magazine, der u.a. Fluxkit Quarterly (ein assembling kit), ADD/PASS (ein Mail Art-Magazin), WORD. (Visuelle Poesie), PILE (historische Mail Art- und Performance-Dokumente), und DOCUMENT (neue Performance- und Mail Art-Dokumentationen) herausgibt.
