Otto David Sherman was born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, in 1936. He dreamed of being a graphic designer since he was 13. His parents supported his dream and the world famous graphic and iconic logo designer Paul Rand became the teenager‘s mentor.
From 1950 to 1954 he went to a special High School for Music and Art. In 1975 he discovered old metal plated images, that he used to produce rubber stamps and hence became a mail artist. The next step was to incorporate actual postage stamps which became his “confessions of nations”.
It was only natural that he should discover that medals and coins were statements of nations as well – usually their heroics, their triumphs no matter what atrocity or hypocrisy they might perpetrate. All nations celebrate heinous leaders, so he made it his task to make it obvious that all rogue rulers must rule.
Sherman now lives in New York City.
Otto David Sherman wurde 1936 in Brownsville, Brooklyn, geboren. Schon mit 13 Jahren träumte er davon, Grafik-Designer zu werden. Seine Eltern unterstützten ihn darin und der weltberühmte Grafik-Designer Paul Rand wurde sein erster Mentor.
Von 1950 bis 1954 besuchte er eine Spezial-Highschool für Musik und Kunst. Im Jahr 1975 entdeckte er auf einem Flohmarkt alte Bilderklischees aus Metall, die er benutzte, um Stempel zu produzieren. So wurde er zu einem Mail Art-Künstler. Der nächste Schritt war die Herstellung von Artistamps, die er “Geständnisse der Nationen” nannte.
Er entdeckte, dass Medaillen, Münzen und Briefmarken Aussagen über die jeweilige Nation machen und in der Regel Heldentaten und Triumphe darstellen, egal was das an Grausamkeiten und Heucheleien bedeutete. Da alle Nationen ihre abscheulichen Führer feiern, machte er es sich zur Aufgabe, dies offensichtlich zu machen.
Sherman lebt heute in New York City.
