Pere Sousa

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Pere Sousa was born in Pont de Suert (Catalunya) in 1955, today he lives in Barcelona. He studied sculpture and fine arts at the University of Barcelona (no degree). In 1992 he started with mail art, from 1994 to 2000 he edited the publications P.O.BOX and Artstrike. He founded the Factoria Merz Mail and organized several exhibitions of artiststamps (1994 – in collaboration with Jas W. Felter) and mail art. In 2000/01 he organized the Artstrike in Barcelona and Madrid. He inter alia wrote an article on postal art in Spain and published the book Mail Art – La Red Eterna (Eternal Network). Both can be found on his website.

Pere Sousa wurde 1955 in Pont de Suert (Catalunya) geboren, heute lebt er in Barcelona. Er studierte Bildhauerei und Schöne Künste an der Universität von Barcelona (ohne Abschluss). 1992 begann er mit Mail Art, von 1994 bis 2000 gab er die Publikationen P.O.BOX und Artstrike heraus. Er gründete die Factoria Merz Mail und organisierte diverse Ausstellungen zum Thema Artiststamps (1994 – in Zusammenarbeit mit Jas W. Felter) und Mail Art. Im Jahr 2000/01 organisierte er den Artstrike in Barcelona und Madrid. Er hat u.a. einen Artikel über die Postkunst in Spanien verfasst und das Buch Mail Art – La Red Eterna (Eternal Network) herausgegeben. Beides findet sich auf seiner Website.

Estudió Escultura y posteriormente de Bellas Artes en la Universidad de Barcelona, (incompletos), actualmente vive en Barcelona. Se inció en el Mail Art en 1992 y desde 1994 hasta 2000 ha dirigido la publicación de Mail Art P.O.BOX y Artstrike. Es el creador de la Factoria Merz Mail desde la que ha organizado diversas exposiciones de Mail Art y Sellos de Artista. Organizó la Huelga de Arte 2000-2001 en Barcelona y Madrid y ha publicado entre otros artículos; Cronologia del Arte Postal en España (1973–1999) y editado el libro Mail Art La Red Eterna.

Gábor Tóth

Gábor Tóth was born in Budapest in 1950. After his law studies he was trained in the printing trade. The versatile artist regularly experimented with different ways of artistic expression: with concrete and Zenpoesie, Conceptual Art, Fluxus, video art, and – under the name TGNoise – even with noise music.

Since the 1970s he has been active in the mail art scene. He made postcards, stamps and artiststamp using screen printing techniques on official stamp sheets. He organized mail art projects and produced stickers with anti-art slogans such as: ARTISTS GO HOME! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ART. These works have reached numerous museums through the mail art network, and  were even seen on the wall of a Zen monastery in Japan.

In addition to postcards and envelopes he also stamped everyday things with texts like: DO NOT TOUCH MY ART! KEEP IT AWAY FROM NATURE! He finished these objects with his signature. Since the 1970s, he has been corresponding with Dick Higgins, who invited him to collaborate on the project for the exploration of visual poetry. This led to an intensive exchange of theoretical and practical issues. An intense artistic friendship and, above all, a similar approach to art and non-art, connects Tóth with Ben Vautier, which was reflected in some collective actions. His most important message in Mail Art still applies for today: MAKE STAMP NOT WAR.

In 1993 Tóth was editor of the illegal Hungarian radio station Tilos Rádió (forbidden radio), from 1994 to 1996 he was editor of the avant-garde magazine Laza Lapok (loose leaves). He is the founder of the Unintelligent Art Association and remained in contact with the Hungarian Neoists Monty Cantsin (Istvan Kantor), who is living in Canada.

He has published 25 books so far, had 11 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 200 group exhibitions. After eight solo CDs and four with his band Mesek STB. (Stories, etc.) he founded the band Paranoiz in 2011.

Gábor Tóth wurde 1950 in Budapest geboren. Nach dem Jura-Studium wurde er im Druckereihandwerk ausgebildet. Der vielseitige Künstler experimentiert  regelmässig mit verschiedenen künstlerischen Ausdruckmöglichkeiten: mit Konkreter und Zenpoesie, Konzeptkunst, Fluxus, Videokunst und – unter dem Namen TGNoise – auch mit Geräuschmusik.

In der Mail Art-Szene war er seit den 1970ern aktiv. Er machte Postkarten, Stempel und Künstler-Briefmarken mittels Siebdruck-Technik auf offiziellen Briefmarkenbögen. Er organisierte Mail Art-Projekte und produzierte Aufkleber mit Anti-Kunst-Slogans wie: ARTISTS GO HOME!  I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ART. Diese Werke haben durch das Mail Art-Netzwerk zahlreiche Museen erreicht, auch auf der Wand eines Zen Kloster in Japan waren sie zu sehen.

Außer Postkarten und Briefumschlägen bestempelte er auch ganz alltägliche Dinge mit den Texten: DON’T TOUCH MY ART! KEEP IT AWAY FROM ART! Diese Objekte veredelte er auch mit seiner Unterschrift. Er korrespondierte seit den 1970er Jahren mit Dick Higgins, der ihn zur Mitarbeit an seinem Projekt zur Erforschung der visuellen Poesie einlud. Daraus entwickelte sich ein intensiver Austausch von theoretischen und praktischen Fragen. Mit Ben Vautier verbindet Gábor Tóth eine intensive künstlerische Freundschaft und vor allem ein ähnlicher Zugang zu Kunst und Nicht-Kunst, die sich in einigen gemeinsamen Aktionen wiederspiegelte. Seine wichtigste Botschaft in der MailArt gilt noch heute: MAKE STAMP NOT WAR.

Gábor Tóth war 1993 Redakteur des illegalen ungarischen Radiosenders Tilos Rádió (Verbotenes Radio), von 1994 bis 1996 war er Redakteur des Avantgarde-Magazins Laza Lapok (Lockere Blätter). Er ist Gründer der Unintelligent Art Association und hielt auch Kontakt zu dem in Kanada lebenden ungarischen Neoisten Monty Cantsin (Istvan Kantor).

Er publizierte bis jetzt 25 Bücher, hatte 11 Einzelausstellungen und  nahm an mehr als 200 Gruppenausstellungen teil. Nach acht Solo CDs und vier mit seiner Band Mesék STB. (Märchen usw.) gründete er 2011 die Band ParaNoiZ.
