Art of the Postcard

Handel Street Projects is pleased to present Art of the Postcard, exhibition of works by 76 international artists, like Anna Banana and Vittore Baroni.

The exhibition is curated in collaboration with Jeremy Cooper, who over the years amassed a significant collection of artists postcards, which he has donated recently to the British Museum.

Die Idee einer offenen Gesellschaft: Künstlerische Netzwerke

im Kontext des Archivs Kees Francke

(1. Dezentraler internationaler Mail Art Congress, Berliner Treffen 1986, links Kees)

In den 1960 und 1970er Jahren begann eine neue Generation von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern Kunstwerke u.a. in Form von Künstlerbüchern, Zeitschriften und Postkarten zu schaffen und zu vervielfältigen. Diese wurden international über alle politischen Grenzen hinweg, von Osteuropa bis Lateinamerika getauscht. Über die Post bildete sich ein internationales Netzwerk und es entstand die Mail Art. Jeder konnte sich beteiligen, niemand wurde ausgeschlossen, es gab keine Jury und keine Zensur. Gesellschaftliche Visionen manifestierten sich in der Enthierarchisierung und Demokratisierung der Kunst. Zu sehen sind Arbeiten aus dem Archiv des niederländischen Künstlers Kees Francke, der in diesem Jahr 65 Jahre alt geworden wäre, ergänzt werden sie durch Werke aus anderen Archiven, um so die künstlerische Vernetzung darzustellen.

A – The Mail Art Archive of Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt and Robert Rehfeldt

at ChertLüdde in Berlin:

The exhibition presents all correspondence with artists whose surname (or name of an artistic group) begins with the letter A. Every single piece will be available to be accessed by the public, while a publication will present an indexed list of the contents. A selection of works will be displayed in vitrines while the rest will be alphabetically numbered and archived inside folders, that the visitors can browse through and take out to closely review. Another section will be dedicated to some of the books from the artist’s archive, again books whose title or content is connected with the letter A or which address the alphabet as such. A video slide show presents a collections of stamps created and used by different artists in their Mail Art correspondence. The exhibition will be further the beginning of a large scale publication project also titled “The Mail Art Archive of Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt and Robert Rehfeldt”. To each letter of the alphabet a single book will be dedicated, where again the same criteria apply. Each book contains a long alphabetical numbered list, showing artists’ names, title, description, country of origin and year of what they sent.
