Art in Networks: The GDR and its Global Relations is an interactive digital platform that makes visible the connections between artists, museums and other cultural actors in the GDR in their international networks. Individual case studies are used to examine how forms of private and institutional contact took shape, for example in the form of travel, study visits or exhibitions. Video interviews show a variety of subjective, also critical and contradictory perspectives on past experiences. In addition to these contributions, a timeline that structures the platform also lists events that selectively depict the international networking of the GDR in art and cultural diplomacy as well as exhibitions.

Art in Networks: The GDR and its Global Relations ist eine interaktive digitale Plattform, die Verbindungen von Künstlerinnen und Künstlern, Museen und anderen kulturellen Akteuren in der DDR in ihren internationalen Netzwerken sichtbar macht. Anhand einzelner Fallbeispiele wird untersucht, wie sich Formen des privaten und institutionellen Kontakts gestalteten, zum Beispiel in Form von Reisen, Studienaufenthalten oder Ausstellungen. In Videointerviews werden vielfältige subjektive, auch kritische und widersprüchliche Perspektiven auf die vergangenen Erfahrungen und Erlebnisse gezeigt. Eine die Plattform strukturierende Timeline verzeichnet neben diesen Beiträgen auch Ereignisse, welche die internationale Vernetzung der DDR in Kunst- und Kulturdiplomatie sowie Ausstellungswesen punktuell darstellen.

Die REACT-Forschungsgruppe wird durch den ESF-gefördert und ist zwischen Februar und Dezember 2022 am Lehrstuhl für Bildwissenschaft im globalen Kontext der TU Dresden angesiedelt.

Art in Networks ist ein stetig wachsendes Projekt, Anregungen, Hinweise und Kommentare nehmen wir unter artinnetworks@tu-dresden.de gern entgegen.

Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt, Figuration collagiert, 1980’s

Die Künstlerin Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt wird mit der Verleihung des Hannah-Höch-Preises 2022 des Landes Berlin für ihr umfangreiches Œuvre gewürdigt, wovon vor allem die Schreibmaschinengrafiken einem internationalen Publikum bekannt wurden. Im Laufe ihrer langen, fruchtbaren Schaffenszeit schuf die Künstlerin einen Werkkomplex, der aktueller nicht sein könnte. Dazu schreibt das Kupferstichkabinett Berlin: „Obwohl Wolf-Rehfeldts Typewritings mehr als 30 Jahre alt sind, sind sie hochaktuell. Sie verhandeln den Wandel der Kommunikationsmedien und ihrer Netzwerke, die globale Kommunikation mit und ohne Grenzen und sie stellen die Frage, nach dem Wert von Information – man denke an heutige Debatten um Fake News und Zensur.“

Der Hannah-Höch-Preis wird seit 1996 von der Kulturverwaltung des Berliner Senats für ein herausragendes künstlerisches Lebenswerk verliehen. Der Preis ist zu Ehren der Künstlerin Hannah Höch (1889–1978) benannt, die mit ihrem Werk als Dadaistin internationale Berühmtheit erlangte.

Die Ausstellung findet vom 02.11.2022 – 05.02.2023 im Kupferstichkabinett Berlin statt. Es erscheint ein Katalog.

The artist Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt was awarded the Hannah Höch Prize 2022 by the State of Berlin for her extensive oeuvre, which first became known to an international audience through the typewriter graphics created between 1972 and 1989. In the course of her long, fruitful creative period, the artist created a complex of works that couldn’t be more topical. The Kupferstichkabinett Berlin comments: “Although Wolf-Rehfeldt’s typewritings are more than 30 years old, they are highly topical. They negotiate the change in communication media and their networks, global communication with and without borders, and they ask the question of the value of information – think of today’s debates about fake news and censorship.”

Established by the Federal State of Berlin in 1996, the Hannah Höch Prize is awarded in recognition of a lifetime of achievement to visual artists. The Hannah Höch Prize celebrates the memory of renowned artist of Germany’s Dada movement, Hannah Höch (1889–1978).

The exhibition will take place from November 2st, 2022 – February 5th, 2023 in the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin, Kulturforum, Matthäikirchplatz, 10785 Berlin. A catalog will appear.
