Ray Johnson as photographer

Several hundred photographs — of more than 3,000 in total, some of which are being published in The New York Times for the first time — will be exhibited in summer 2022 at the Morgan Library & Museum, in a selection chosen by Joel Smith, the museum’s curator and head of photography. (An exhibition of Ray Johnson’s collages and other works will be on view next month at David Zwirner in New York.)

James Warren Felter (Jas W Felter) was born in New York State in the USA in 1943. He started painting as a teenager, and made his first Mail Art in 1957. He has an BA in Fine Art (Painting) from the University of South Florida (1964).  He was a United States Peace Corps Volunteer to Ecuador in the First Latin American Regional Handicraft Program (1964–66). He was the founding Director/Curator of the Simon Fraser University Gallery in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada (1972–1985).  He currently lives in Vancouver, BC.

Jas W Felter is a published poet, art critic, author, film-maker, curator, collector and visual artist.  He had his first solo exhibition in 1961 and made his first artistamp in 1974, the same year he organized and curated the world’s first exhibition of Artistamps presented at Simon Fraser University (October 1974).  During that same year he formed a legal corporation known as FIVE/CINQ Aesthetics Limited to act as an artist – mainly to produce and distribute Mail Art.  Now he runs a unincorporated entity under the name of FIVE/CINQ Unlimited. Felter has organized numerous exhibitions of Artistamps, including Artistamps and Stamp Images which toured Canada, the USA and Europe.

Im selben Jahr organisierte und kuratierte er die weltweit erste Ausstellung von Artistamps an der Simon Fraser University (Oktober 1974). Gleichzeitig gründete er die FIVE/CINQ Aesthetics Limited. Als Künstler widmete er sich vor allem der Herstellung und Verbreitung von Mail Art. Heute betreibt er eine Personengesellschaft unter dem Namen FIVE/CINQ Unlimited. Jas W Felter machte zahlreiche Ausstellungen von Artistamps, die in Kanada, den USA und in Europa zu sehen waren.

John Tostado

John Tostado, known as Oh Boy!, was born in Los Angeles, California in 1959. At California State University, Northridge, he earned a degree in television production. Today he lives in Burbank, California, and creates graphics for clients such as Disney, Fox and Warner Bros.

Suggested by a friend he began to exchange art via mail in 1980. In 1982, he saw a Mail Art exhibition in San Diego, and subsequently he entered the Mail Art network. He is known as a good eraser carver and for a two-man show he did with Jules Davis in San Francisco. In 1984 he began exchanging mail with John Evans. In 2006 – with Evans’ consent – he organized The Fake John Evans Collage Project. Thousands of mail artists in the world, were sent a blank collage, on which they could do their own version of a John Evans piece.

Im Jahr 2006 organisierte er – mit Zustimmung von Evans – das Fake John Evans Collage Projekt. Tausenden von Mail-Artisten in der ganzen Welt schickte er eine leere Collage, in die diese ihre eigene Version eines John Evans-Kunstwerks eintragen konnten.

George Maciunas

George Maciunas was born in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 1931. In 1948, Maciunas and his familiy emigrated to the USA after a period in Germany. At various universities there, he studied art history, graphic art, architecture and musical theory from 1949 to 1960. In 1960, he conceived his first plans to publish a magazine called Fluxus. At the AG Gallery in New York he organized concerts with Dick Higgins, Yoko Ono and others. In 1961, he moved to Germany (Wiesbaden) and met Emmett Williams, Nam June Paik and Ben Patterson. In September 1962, the first series of concerts organized by Maciunas called Fluxus – International Festival of Newest Music took place in Wiesbaden, attracting considerable attention, mainly due to the complete destruction of a concert piano. Having returned to the USA in 1963, Maciunas continued to be the main organizer of numerous Fluxus events and published numerous editions by the artists of the network (which he himself designed strikingly). For example the legendary Fluxpost Kit in 1968 with contributions by Ben Vautier and Robert Watts. In 1975, Maciunas withdrew to New Marlborough, Massachusetts, where he died of cancer at the age of forty-six in 1978.

In der AG Gallery in New York veranstaltete er Konzerte mit Dick Higgins, Yoko Ono und anderen. 1961 zog nach Wiesbaden, wo er Emmett Williams, Nam June Paik und Ben Patterson kennenlernte. Im September 1962 fand das von ihm organisierte Konzert Fluxus – Internationale Festspiele neuester Musik in Wiesbaden statt, das durch die vollständige Zerstörung eines Konzertflügels große Aufregung verursachte. Seit 1963 wieder in den USA, war Maciunas weiterhin Hauptorganisator zahlreicher Fluxus-Veranstaltungen und Herausgeber vieler Fluxus-Editionen, die er selbst gestaltete. Dazu zählt das legendäre Fluxpost Kit von 1968 mit Beiträgen von Ben Vautier und Robert Watts. 1975 zog er nach New Marlborough, Massachusetts, wo er 1978 im Alter von 46 Jahren an Krebs starb.

Patricia Tavenner

Patricia Tavenner was born March 22, 1935. She had been living in Oakland, California, and became known as “Mail Queen”. She entered into the Mail Art network in the early 1970s, with the publication of her, “Mail Order Art”. She published four issues from 1971–1972, that served as a distribution system for artists. Tavenner was part of the Bay Area Dada Group in the mid-1970s. She was a fierce advocate of women’s issues in the arts, co-founding the Northern California Women’s Caucus for the Arts in 1972.

In addition to her role as publisher, she was also one of the early producers of artist postage stamps (artistamps), and was included in the first exhibition of the medium, James Warren Felter’s, “Artists’ Stamps and Stamp Images”, held at Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, in 1976. She was one of fourteen contributors representing the United States in the exhibition. She continued her artistamp activity over the years, curating the “First California Artists Stamp Show” in 1995, and an exhibition on women artistamp producers for The Stamp Art Gallery in San Francisco in the 1990s. In 2007, Tavenner contributed to and attended the Budapest, Hungary, National Museum of Fine Arts exhibition, “ParaStamp: Four Decades of Artistamps from Fluxus to the Internet”, organized by the Artpool Research Center (György Galántai).

Tavenner continued her publishing activities as well. Her Eternal Press published several editions of the periodical, “An Artist Speaks”, and “A Family Line”, documenting a video she produced on her family, as well as the autobiographical, “Four Years and More”.  She was a long time instructor of the Berkeley Extension Center in San Francisco, and a practicing astrologer. In November of 2012, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art published a tribute to her work, which can be found here: Receipt of Delivery.

Patricia Tavenner passed away on May 10, 2013.
