Leben und Arbeit/biography

Michael Leigh was born in London in 1947. He studied painting and print making at Southend, Manchester and Chelsea schools of art where he obtained his masters degree in fine art in 1971. He has always made art for a living suported by temporary and part time jobs. In 1980 he discovered the mail art network at the Greenwich Theatre Gallery. He founded the A.1. Waste Paper Company after finding a rubber stamp bearing the name of a defunct company at a flea market. In the mid 1980’s he started making small photo-copied publications that he traded through the post. Curios Thing was the first one. He continued this until 2000, with other publications like Curios Nahpro, Curios Snail, and Curios Radio – some of them together with collaborators.

Leigh curated many mail art projects including “Peace In The World Or The World In Pieces” in 1984, that was shown at the Whitechapel Open in London.  He exchanged postcard and cassettes in projects such as “Handy Postcard Exchange” and “Peace Postcard Exchange”.

More recently he has slimmed down his mail art activities and concentrated on his many blogs and projects on the internet.

Michael Leigh wurde 1947 in London geboren. Er studierte Malerei und Grafik an den Kunsthochschulen in Southend, Manchester und Chelsea, wo er 1971 seinen Master in Bildender Kunst machte. Er hat immer von seiner Kunst gelebt, aber vorübergehend auch Teilzeitjobs gemacht. Das Mail Art-Netzwerk entdeckte er 1980 in der Greenwich Theatre Gallery für sich. Er gründete die A.1. Waste Paper Company, wofür er den Stempel einer nicht mehr bestehenden Firma, den er auf einem Flohmarkt fand, benutzte. Mitte der 1980er Jahre begann er, kleine fotokopierte Publikationen zu erstellen, die er über den Postweg austauschte. Curios Thing war die erste. Dies setzte er bis ins Jahr 2000 fort, es entstanden Publikationen wie Curios Nahpro, Curios Snail und Curios Radio – einige zusammen mit anderen Künstlern.

Michael Leigh kuratierte viele Mail Art-Projekte, darunter “Peace In The World Or The World In Pieces”, das 1984 beim Whitechapel Open in London gezeigt wurde. Er tauschte Postkarten und Kassetten in Projekten wie “Handy Postcard Exchange” und “Peace Postcard Exchange” aus.
