Mark Bloch was born in Würzburg, Germany, in 1956 where his father was based as soldier of the US Army. He grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. The multi-media artist is also known as Pan, P.A.N., Panman, Panpost. Since 1982 he has been living in New York City and works in the tradition of Dada, the Surrealists, Marcel Duchamp, the Fluxus group and Ray Johnson.
Bloch has been involved in Mail Art and computer-related artwork since 1977. He uses the postal system as well as other communication media. He does videos, performance art and experimental music, postcards, artistamps and e-mail art and called for several international Mail Art projects, i.e. the infamous Last Mail Art Show which created controversy. He also raises eyebrows with his research on early Neoism and his Word Strike, that he started in 1989. That same year he began to write a new manifesto every day that remains unpublished but he recently revealed his new twin theories of Storàge and Panmodernism, which he hopes to merge into a grand unified field theory of artistic creation.
Bloch also creates articles, pamphlets and books concerning Mail Art-related projects. He recently revived his irregularly issued zine called Panmag in addition to a cable TV show in New York called Panscan TV. Bloch was one of the first mail artists to get involved in computer networking.
Mark Bloch wurde 1956 in Würzburg geboren, wo sein Vater als Soldat der US-Armee stationiert war. Er wuchs in Cleveland, Ohio, in den USA auf. Der Multimedia- und Konzept-Künstler ist auch als P.A.N., Panman und Panpost bekannt. Seit 1982 lebt er in New York City und arbeitet in der Tradition von Dada, den Surrealisten, Marcel Duchamp, der Fluxus-Gruppe und Ray Johnson.
Bloch beschäftigt sich seit 1977 mit Mail Art und auch schon mit computergenerierter Kunst. Er benutzt neben dem Postsystem alle anderen Kommunikationsmedien wie das Internet. Er macht Videos, Performances, experimentelle Musik, Postkarten, Artistamps und e-Mail-Kunst und rief zu mehreren internationalen Mail Art-Projekten auf, u.a. zur berüchtigten Last Mail Art Show, die eine Kontroverse auslöste. Er verursachte auch Irritationen mit seinem Neoism-Konzept und dem Art Strike, zu dem er 1989 aufrief und wofür er jeden Tag ein neues Manifest schuf, was natürlich unveröffentlicht blieb.
Mark Bloch publiziert aber Artikel, Pamphlete und Bücher zur Mail Art. Erst kürzlich belebte er die Fanzine-Szene erneut mit einer unregelmäßig vom New Yorker Kabelfernsehen ausgestrahlten Sendung, die er Panscan-TV nennt.
