John Evans was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1932 and grew up in California. At the Art Institute of Chicago, he received a bachelor’s degree (1961) and a Master of Fine Arts (1963). He then moved to New York where he from 1964 to 2000 made a collage every day, especially with things that he found on on the streets the day, such as labels from beer bottles, business cards, concert posters, newspaper clippings, matchbooks, playing cards and pencil shavings and embellished each collage with painted duck heads.
In 1964 Ray Johnson introduced Evans to the international Mail Art underground. In the beginning, the works went from one artist to the next one, with each adding some embellishment before mailing it on. Evans liked to use the stamp “Avenue B School of Art”.
Our throw-away culture is poignantly reflected in Evans works. His visual diary – each of over the 10,000 collages on 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper is marked with the date – is much more than an ordinary sketchbook. Evans was a member of the New York Neo-Dada community with Ray Johnson, Buster Cleveland, Albert Fine, and May Wilson. To them and other artists, such as the Italian Guglielmo Achille Cavellini, the Fluxus artists George Maciunas and Ed Higgins, Evans paid tribute to on his collages.
He died October 5, 2012 in his hometown New York.
John Evans wurde 1932 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, geboren und wuchs in Kalifornien auf. Am Art Institute of Chicago erhielt er einen Bachelor (1961) und einen Master of Fine Arts (1963). Danach zog er nach New York und machte dort zwischen 1964 und 2000 jeden Tag eine Collage aus dem, was er am Tag auf der Straße fand, wie Etiketten von Bierflaschen, Visitenkarten, Konzert-Plakaten, Zeitungsausschnitten, Streichholzschachteln, Spielkarten und Bleistiftspänen, und verschönerte jede Collage mit gemalten Entenköpfen.
Ray Johnson führte Evans 1964 in den internationalen Mail Art-Untergrund ein. Zunächst wanderten die Blätter von einem Künstler zum nächsten, wobei jeder einige Verschönerungen hinzufügte. Evans benutzte gern den Stempel “Avenue B School of Art”.
Unsere Wegwerf-Kultur findet sich in Evans Werken wieder. Sein visuelles Tagebuch – jede der über 10.000 Collagen hat das Format 21,6 x 27,9 cm und ist mit dem Datum versehen – ist viel mehr als ein übliches Skizzenbuch. Evans war Mitglied der New Yorker Neo-Dada Community mit Ray Johnson, Buster Cleveland, Albert Fine und May Wilson. Ihnen und anderen Künstlern, wie dem Italiener Guglielmo Achille Cavellini, den Fluxus-Künstlern George Maciunas und Ed Higgins, zollte Evans auf seinen Collagen Tribut.
Am 5. Oktober 2012 starb er in New York.
