Peter W. Kaufmann was born in Zurich on July 4, 1945. He lives and works as co-owner of an international operating bureau for architecture near Zurich. He has been doing Mail Art since 1989. His crucial experience was an article by H.R. Fricker published in a Suisse daily newspaper. His works arise out of situations. With the help of computer based image editing PWK has made artistamps and stamps of distinctive diction. By being bound to the world wide Mail Art network and the contact to other international Mail Artists his artistamps often show a reflection of the works sent to him. Every year dozens of these artistamps are produced in small editions and then sent to selected artists.
The “Cow f man ism” is a crucial part of the work of PWK, it is based on a pun using his own name.
As major congress coordinator for Europe PWK did the chronicle of the DNC’92 brought to life by Fricker and furthermore participated in various Decentralised Networker Congresses in Europe.

Peter W. Kaufmann wurde am 4. Juli 1945 in Zürich geboren. Er lebt und arbeitet in der Nähe von Zürich als Mitinhaber eines international tätigen Architekturbüros. Seit 1989 beschäftigt er sich aktiv mit der Mail Art. Sein Schlüsselerlebnis war ein Artikel über die Mail Art von H.R. Fricker in einer Schweizer Tageszeitung. Die Arbeiten von PWK entstehen situativ. Mit den Möglichkeiten computergestützter Bildverarbeitung hat PWK Artistamps und Stempel in einer unverkennbaren Ausdrucksweise entwickelt. Durch die Einbindung in das weltweite Mail Art-Network und den Kontakt zu anderen internationalen Mailartisten zeigen die Artistamps von PWK oftmals eine pointierte Reflektion auf die zugesandten Werke. Pro Jahr entstehen so dutzende Artistamps in Kleinstauflagen, die an ausgewählte Künstler verschickt werden.
Der “Cow f man ism” stellt im Werk von PWK ein prägendes Element dar, ihm liegt die Verbalhornung des eigenen Namens Kuh (englisch: “Cow”) zugrunde.
Als major congress coordinator für Europa hat PWK die Chronologie des von H.R. Fricker ins Leben gerufenen DNC’92 erstellt und selbst an zahlreichen Dezentralen Networker Congressen in Europa teilgenommen.

Peter W. Kaufmann ist am 12. Oktober 2019 gestorben.

Rémy Pénard

Rémy Pénard was born in 1944. In the beginning of the 1970s the sculptor started to send out letters to artists with whome he had been friends. He exchanged Mail Art with Hans Werner Kalkmann from 1972 on. Ken Friedman invited him to be part of the “Omaha Flow System” in 1973. In 1976 he visited Ben Vautier in Nice. Between 1980 and 2000 he participated in more than 1200 Mail Art shows. He is known for his stenciled graffitis and rubberstamps.

In 1999 he was co-founder of the “Artists’ Republic”. And in 2003 he participated in the Brain Academy Apartment project at the 50th Biennal in Venice. He lives in Limoges and is involved with environmental projects.

Rémy Pénard wurde 1944 geboren. Anfang der 1970er Jahre begann der Bildhauer Briefe an Künstlerfreunde zu verschicken. Mit Hans Werner Kalkmann tauschte er Mail Art ab 1972 aus. Ken Friedman lud ihn 1973 ein, sich am “Omaha Flow System” zu beteiligen. 1976 besuchte er Ben Vautier in Nizza. Zwischen 1980 und 2000 nahm er an mehr als 1200 Mail Art-Shows teil. Er ist bekannt für seine Schablonen-Graffiti und Rubberstamps.

1999 war er Mitbegründer der “Künstlerrepublik”. 2003 nahm er am Brain Academy Apartment-Project auf der 50. Biennale in Venedig teil. Er lebt in Limoges und engagiert sich für Umwelt-Projekte.

Rainer Luck

Rainer Luck wurde 1946 in Erfurt geboren. Er war dort als Restaurator tätig und gehörte zu den Organisatoren der inoffiziellen “Atelierbund”-Ausstellungen, wo 1976 zum ersten Mal in der DDR Mail Art aus dem Rehfeldt-Archiv gezeigt wurde. Bei der Ausstellungseröffnung lernte er auch Oskar Manigk kennen. Von nun an nahm er an vielen Mail Art-Projekten teil. Besonders bekannt wurde seine kleine Radierung zum offiziellen Martin-Luther-Jahr der DDR, die Beuys signierte und damit in den Kanon seiner Multiples aufnahm. Als Rainer Lucks Antragstellung auf Ausreise in die BRD kriminalisiert wurde und er 1984 ins Gefängnis musste, engagierte sich Beuys für ihn (siehe Abbildung bei Beuys). Nach dem Häftlingsfreikauf zog Rainer Luck 1985 nach Rosenheim/Bayern. Er arbeitete wieder als Restaurator – primär für das Bayerische Denkmalsamt. Mail Art betrieb er nur noch sporadisch.
Viele Jahre lebte er in Ungarn. Am 31.12.2022 ist er in Bad Endorf gestorben.

Luck was born in Erfurt in 1946. There he had been working as a restorer and got involved with the inofficial “Atelierbund” exhibitions, that in 1976 showed, for the first time in the GDR, Mail Art from the archive of Robert Rehfeldt. At the vernissage he got to know Oskar Manigk. From that time on he participated regularly in Mail Art projects. His etching for the official Martin Luther year of the GDR, that had been signed by Joseph Beuys and thereby became part of the canon of his multiples, got especially well known. When Rainer Luck’s application to leave the country was criminalised and when he was sent to prison in 1984, Beuys got involved with his matters (see the picture at the entry on Beuys). After his release from prison, made possible with money from Western Germany, he moved to Rosenheim/Bavaria. He again worked as restorer amongst others for the Office for Monuments in Bavaria. He did Mail Art rather seldomly.
He lived in Hungary for many years. He died in Bad Endorf on December 31, 2022.

Ben Vautier

Leben und Arbeit/biography

Ben Vautier was born on 18 July 1935 in Naples. He came to Nice in 1949, where he opened a gallery shop in 1958. In 1962 he encountered many Fluxus artists at the Festival of Misfits in London, with whom he subsequently collaborated. In 1963 he organized the Fluxus Festival of Total Art in Nice. In his manifestos, Mail Art actions and text pictures he questioned art in general. He dealt critically with the artist’s role, his vanity and selfishness. He consequently became an early Mail Artist. His postcard The Postman’s Choice from 1965, being identical on both sides, got especially popular.
In 1966, he organized a Fluxus concert together with Milan Knízák, Dick Higgins and others in Prague. He was invited to documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972.
He turned his house in the hills near Nice into an unique complete artwork. Accordingly, visiting his website is interesting.

Ben died by suicide in his home in Nice on June 5, 2024, just hours after his wife Annie died of a stroke.

Ben Vautier wurde am 18. Juli 1935 in Neapel geboren. 1949 kam er nach Nizza, wo er 1958 eine Ladengalerie eröffnete. Im Jahre 1962 traf er in London auf dem Festival of Misfits viele Fluxus-Künstler, mit denen er von nun an intensiv zusammenarbeitete. 1963 organisierte er das Fluxus Festival of Total Art in Nizza. In Manifesten, Aktionen und Schriftbildern stellte er die Kunst in Frage. Er setzte sich kritisch mit der Rolle des Künstlers, seiner Eitelkeit und seinem Egoismus auseinander. Folgerichtig wurde er ein früher Mail Artist. Berühmt war seine beidseitig identische Postkarte The Postman’s Choice von 1965.
1966 nahm er mit anderen Fluxus-Künstlern, wie Dick Higgins und Milan Knízák, an einem Fluxus-Konzert in Prag teil. 1972 wurde er zur Teilnahme an der documenta 5 nach Kassel eingeladen. 1979 war er für ein Jahr DAAD-Stipendiat in Westberlin.
Sein Haus auf den Hügeln von Nizza hat Ben Vautier im Laufe der Jahre zu einem einzigartigen Gesamtkunstwerk gestaltet. Ein Besuch seiner Website lohnt sich.

Ben starb am 5. Juni 2024 in seinem Haus in Nizza durch Suizid, nur wenige Stunden zuvor war seine Frau Annie an einem Schlaganfall gestorben.

Franco Piri Focardi

Franco Piri Focardi is a free artist, painter, poet and visual poet, born in Rignano s/Arno in 1953. He edited 17 numbers of “CRASH zine”, a crazy crossing of art and poetry with music. In 1986 he started a first edition of Artistamps “Arte Postale”. He published the first collective anthology “RISULTATI GARANTITI” in 1988. In 1990 he edited the catalogue “INTERNATIONAL PERSONAL STAMP CRASH” containing over 300 artistamps. The second catalogue of this project followed in 1991. He had exhibitions at the Biblioteca Comunale Rignano s/Arno, and in Arezzo Wave, with in total over 1000 artistamps.
By the year 1986 he had produced thousands of different stamps with the name “F Piri F. Arte Postale”. In 2007 he published a great complete catalogue, colored, celebrating “Twenty years of Artistamps”.
He participated in hundreds of exhibitions and many of his works are enclosed in the world catalogue of MAIL ART. His stamps are in many collections, like: “MUSEE DE LA POSTE” (Paris), “MUSEO INTERNACIONALE DE NEU ART” (Vancouver), etc.
In 2000 he started “CREATIVA”, an annual meeting of artists doing mail art, performances, videos and poetry, where they could come into personal contact. For these eight mail art projects he published eight catalogues: “Dove sono i ragazzi”, “Povero uranio”, “Popoli senza nome”, “Disarmare il mondo”, “Uscita di sicurezza”, “Oltre i limiti”, “Ricchezza e Povert‡”, “NÈ servi NÈ padroni”.

Franco Piri Focardi ist Maler, Dichter und Visueller Poet. Er wurde 1953 in Rignano s/Arno geboren wurde. Er edierte bisher 17 Ausgaben des “CRASH zine”, einer verrückten Kreuzung aus Kunst, Poesie und Musik. 1986 stellte er eine erste Ausgabe von Artistamps “Arte Postale” her. 1988 publizierte er die erste kollektive Anthologie “RISULTATI GARANTITI”. 1990 gab er den Katalog “INTERNATIONAL PERSONAL STAMP CRASH” mit über 300 Artistamps heraus. 1991 folgte der zweite Katalog zu diesem Projekt. Dazu gab es Ausstellungen in der Biblioteca Comunale Rignano s/Arno und in Arezzo Wave, mit insgesamt über 1000 Artistamps.
Bis 1986 hatte er tausende verschiedene Marken mit der Aufschrift “F Piri F. Arte Postale” hergestellt. 2007 veröffentlichte er einen großen kompletten Katalog mit dem er “Twenty years of Artistamps” feierte.
Er nahm an hunderten von Ausstellungen teil und seine Marken sind in vielen Sammlungen, wie dem “Musée de la Poste” (Paris) und dem “Museo Internacionale de neu art” (Vancouver) vertreten.
2000 startete er mit “Creativa” ein jährliches Treffen für Künstler, die sich mit Mail Art, Performances, Videos und Poesie beschäftigen. Für diese acht Mail Art-Treffen gab er acht Kataloge heraus: “Dove sono i ragazzi”, “Povero uranio”, “Popoli senza nome”, “Disarmare il mondo”, “Uscita di sicurezza”, “Oltre i limiti”, “Ricchezza e Poverti”, “NÈ servi NÈ padroni”.
